The One Book You Must Read

I’m on my second reading of one of the most influential books of all time and it is exceeding my expectations again. When I read a book, I want to be inspired, motivated, or taught something useful. This book gets five stars in all of the above. (Skip the speech and jump to the book.)

First published in 1936, this book has been foundational to the success of more than 15 million people worldwide. A diploma from one of the author’s courses even hangs are Warren Buffet’s wall (see the article in Time).

The book is How To Win Friends and Influence People, by Dale Carnegie. Many see the title and discount it as a “sales” book. But this is far more than just a sales book.

It is broken into 30, easy-to-read chapters (or 37 if you find a really old version), each focused on a specific principle. I like to read books like this before bed. I can finish a chapter and have something positive to sleep on.

In every chapter I am reminded of something I should be doing and find something new to work on. Here are three ways this book is helping me:

  1. Increase success and make more money. This book gets to the core of what it really means to add value to people’s lives. It separates the “salesman” from the “servant.” It shows you what the core of work and business should truly be. It provides real life examples of how people have shot to success by applying the fundamental principles that should be taught in every school, but are unfortunately not.
  2. Improve relationships with people. This book lays the groundwork for building long-lasting relationships. It puts those relationships in perspective with everything you are trying to accomplish. It has truly motivated me to be the person I know I should be.
  3. Stay true to my purpose? This book will ground you. It will remind you to think every day about what is important. It’s easy to get lost in the shuffle of life. In the mundane. Or even in the rush and excitement from time to time. This book will remind you what it’s all about.

If you only have time to read one book, make it one that will inspire you, motivate you, and teach you something practical all at the same time.
