I was spacing out today while my daughter was running in circles outside, burning energy energy after sitting for dinner. There was an undertone in my mood like a timer counting down—when it ran out, it would be time to take command and move on.
In a magic moment, I realized that I’d accepted that this moment was a waste of time. There was nothing purposeful to do here. I was just letting it pass so we could get on to the next item on the agenda.
But what could be more important and purposeful than engaging with my daughter?
I snapped out of it, grabbed her hands, looked her in the eyes and said, “Let’s go.” And we ran in circles and wandered through some bushes for another 30 minutes until she was ready to go.
When it feels like you’re wasting time, shake yourself out of autopilot, remember that life is lived in each precious moment, and go live it.
